What are the doshas?

Kapha Dosha

Inner Earth, Comfort, and Glow

In Ayurveda, your body and mind are made up of a unique blend of energies called doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each one governs different aspects of your health, personality, and beauty. Think of them as your internal operating system.

Kapha Dosha is the energy of earth and water. It’s the force that grounds you, keeps your body nourished, your skin hydrated, and your emotions steady. Kapha is your inner nurturer—calm, strong, and deeply rooted in stability.

If you’re Kapha-dominant, you likely carry a peaceful presence. You’re the supportive friend, the deep feeler, the one who brings comfort and calm to those around you. You may also love routine, cozy spaces, and anything that feels soft, sensual, and safe. But when Kapha gets out of balance? You might feel stuck, heavy, or disconnected from your spark.

Kapha types are known for their calm demeanour, resilience, and strong immune systems but may face imbalances leading to lethargy, weight gain, or congestion when their nurturing nature is excessive. To foster balance, a Kapha-focused approach involves invigorating practices, a diet emphasizing warmth and lightness, and activities that stimulate movement and vitality to counterbalance the grounding nature of Kapha.

The Qualities of the Doshas

According to Ayurveda, everything in and around us possesses qualities. These qualities work together to form the very essence of the world we inhabit, shaping the experiences and interactions that define our daily lives.

Kapha is heavy, slow, steady, solid, cold, soft, and oilyThese qualities translate into your body features and processes, creating unique characteristics that make you who you are. However, when these qualities are in excess, imbalances can build up and cause health problems. This happens when your natural tendencies become too strong in certain areas, making those spots more likely to develop health issues.

Kapha Dosha Qualities

Cold

Think cool and calm vs. sluggish

In balance, this quality supports healthy, stabilizing, and nourishing functions in the body and mind, like strength and endurance, mental stability and strong immunity. However, when in excess, it can show up as cold sensations on the skin, frequent colds, congestion or slow digestion.

Kapha Dosha Qualities

Tips to Balance Kapha

When Kapha is out of balance, it shows up in a series of imbalances that dim your glow and vitality like oily skin and hair, congestion, breakouts, or a dull complexion with dry patches. Emotionally and mentally, it may lead to resistance to change, feelings of lethargy, excessive attachment to the past, or lack of motivation.

That's because Kapha types thrive with stimulation, movement, lightness, and variety. Your body wants to be awakened, not overwhelmed. Your glow comes from gently shaking up your routine, warming your system, and staying inspired.

Simple tips to support your Kapha energy:

  • Favor light, spicy, and warming foods—think ginger tea, leafy greens, and roasted veggies
  • Wake up early and create a morning ritual that energizes you (think dry brushing, lemon water, upbeat music)
  • Keep your body moving daily, even with just a 10-minute dance break or brisk walk
  • Use invigorating herbs and oils like eucalyptus, tulsi, or rosemary in your self-care
  • Declutter your space—Kapha loves comfort, but too much “stuff” can lead to stagnation
