Struggling with dry, lifeless, or oily hair? Noticing hair loss or a lack of shine? An Ayurvedic hair treatment using herbal masks might be exactly what your hair needs. Ayurveda focuses on restoring inner balance, which includes healthy, vibrant hair. The key? Using the right herbs and masks based on your dosha: Vata, Pitta, or Kapha.

So, I’ve written quite a bit about hair and how to get your best hair yet. You’ve learned which oils to use based on your dosha, which ayurvedic treatments can help you strengthen your mane and what are the best foods for shiny hair. We’re staying on the haircare train for now and in this article, you’ll discover the best Ayurvedic hair masks and herbs for your hair type.

Why Ayurvedic Hair Masks and Herbs Actually Work

Ayurveda views hair care as a combination of external nourishment and internal balance. Herbal treatments help repair hair, soothe the scalp, and encourage growth, without synthetic ingredients. Benefits of Ayurvedic hair care include:

  • Deep hydration and repair

  • Reduction of hair loss and dandruff

  • Strengthening of hair roots

  • Healthier scalp and natural shine

But not every herb or mask suits every person. Your dosha determines what treatments your hair will truly benefit from.

Don’t know your dosha yet? Take this short quiz and start personalizing your wellness.

Vata: Hydrating Masks for Dry, Brittle Hair

Vata hair tends to be dry, fine, and prone to breakage or frizz. The air and space elements of Vata lead to a lack of natural oils, which can cause split ends and a flaky scalp.

Best Ayurvedic herbs for Vata:

  • Brahmi – Soothes the scalp and strengthens roots

  • Ashwagandha – Reduces stress-related hair loss

  • Aloe vera – Deeply hydrates and prevents breakage

Nourishing hair mask for Vata:

  • 2 tbsp almond oil

  • 1 tbsp coconut milk

  • 1 tsp brahmi powder

Mix and apply to scalp and lengths. Leave on for 30 minutes, then rinse with a gentle shampoo.

AZEȲA tip: Wrap your hair in a warm towel after applying to enhance absorption and hydration.

Pitta: Cooling Masks for Sensitive Scalp and Oily Hair

Pitta types often deal with an oily scalp, inflammation, or irritation due to excess internal heat. These masks and herbs help cool the scalp and regulate sebum production.

Best Ayurvedic herbs for Pitta:

  • Bhringraj – Reduces hair loss and cools the scalp

  • Sandalwood powder – Calms inflammation and irritation

  • Coriander seed – Soothes scalp and helps with dandruff

Balancing hair mask for Pitta:

  • 2 tbsp yogurt

  • 1 tsp bhringraj powder

  • 1 tsp sandalwood powder

Apply to scalp and roots. Leave on for 20–30 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water.

AZEȲA tip: Avoid hot showers or harsh shampoos as they aggravate Pitta.

Kapha: Refreshing Masks for Oily, Heavy Hair

Kapha hair tends to feel oily, heavy, and flat due to the water and earth elements. Cleansing masks help remove excess oil, unclog pores, and add bounce.

Best Ayurvedic herbs for Kapha:

  • Tulsi (holy basil) – Purifies and reduces oil

  • Neem – Cleanses the scalp and fights dandruff

  • Rosemary – Boosts circulation and supports growth

Cleansing hair mask for Kapha:

  • 2 tbsp Multani Mitti (Fuller’s Earth clay)

  • 1 tsp neem powder

  • 2 tbsp rose water

Apply to scalp. Leave on for 15–20 minutes and rinse with cool water.

AZEȲA tip: Regular scalp massage (without oil) helps stimulate blood flow and lift heaviness.
